Cuts and Burns

La Belle Vaughn

La Belle Vaughn

La Vaughn Belle (whose images appear on the cover of this issue) is an artist whose work is dedicated to making visible the unremembered. He works in a variety of disciplines that include painting, installation, photography, video, and public interventions. Borrowing from elements of architecture, history, and archeology, she explores the material culture of coloniality, and her art presents countervisualities and counternarratives that challenge colonial hierarchies and invisibility. Her work has been exhibited in the Caribbean, the United States, and Europe in institutions such as the Museo del Barrio (New York), Museum of the African Diaspora (San Francisco), Casa de las Americas (Cuba), and Christiansborg Palace (Denmark). She holds an MFA from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba, and an MA and a BA from Columbia University, New York. Currently, she is a fellow at the Social Justice Institute at the Barnard Research Center for Women at Columbia University. Her studio is based in the Virgin Islands
