A Conversation on Capitalism, Colonialism, and Climate Change in the Caribbean

13 July 2018
Eye of the Storm

1 August 2018
6:30pm - 8:30pm
The Loisaida Center
710 E. 9th Street

Nearly a year after Hurricanes Irma and Maria rocked the Caribbean, what lessons can we learn? In the midst of the 2018 hurricane season, what can both affected communities and their allies do to prepare for future climate events and prevent the kind of destruction the hurricanes wrought on the region?

In this panel, contributors from the summer issue of NACLA attempt to answer these questions, exploring the conditions that have led the Caribbean to where it is today. It is impossible to ignore the ways in which neoliberal capitalism, colonialism, and climate change have come together in the Caribbean to reanimate and strengthen economic and racial hierarchies that have long marked the region and its place in the world. From Puerto Rico to Barbuda and beyond, how we can create a safer and more just future for the region as a whole?

This event is free and open to the public. Visit the NACLA facebook page for more information.
